For college and university professors in a typical classroom, instead of lecturing while looking into the eyes of eager students it is increasingly common to face a sea of laptops in the classroom. Let’s face it – it’s very difficult for one instructor to compete with a world of information online!

What does it mean and who defines what competence is?  It is increasingly clear that almost everyone involved in training and assessment has their own unique opinions and definitions of competency. Why are we moving towards competency-based education? Are these decisions based on traditions of educational instruction, or on a new understanding of how adults learn and perform in the workplace?

A goal of my Presidency is to increase communication between UAA and membership. This will be accomplished through monthly blog posts on informational topics and quarterly updates that highlight key activities within the association. It is well known that the aviation industry is experiencing a time of accelerated growth.  Although this places collegiate aviation institutions in a very strong position to attract student and engage industry partners, on a global scale the reality is that the demand for aviation professionals is greater than our collective capacity to produce them.
